The bow is the connecting link between the hand of the musician and the instrument.
It transports the emotion of the string-player and transforms it into music.

Wolfgang Romberg

After highschool and training as a technical draftsman Wolfgang Romberg followed his desire to work together with musicians and his hands.

After three years of studies in England to become a violinmaker he specialized in bowmaking under the direction of Derek Wilson, a former member of the W.E.Hill& Sons workshops.

Almost ten years Wolfgang Romberg spent in the workshop of Peter Benedek in Munich running the bowmaking department.

In November 1998 he achieved his master degree in bowmaking.

Since 1999 Wolfgang Romberg runs his own workshop in Munich.

Exhibitions and fairs in Germany, Italy, France, England, USA and China.

Wolfgang Romberg is member of the German Violin and Bowmaker association VDG and International Pernambuco Conservation Initiative I.P.C.I.

Atelier

Beside restauration and repair the workshop of Wolfgang Romberg is concentrating on copies of old Masterbows.

Modeling is based on bows from the best period in bowmaking 1850 and earlier. Among them Nicolas Kittel, Dominique Peccatte, Francoir Tourte and Heinrich Knopf.

Also Wolfgang Romberg makes bows to special order.

The success of Wolfgang Rombergs work is based on the close contact with the musician. A special bow can only be made in a narrow exchange with the customer. Fine tuning and adjustments are undertake directly with the customer after having finished the bow.

Musicians from the local orchestras like Bayerische Staatsoper and Munich Philarmonic Orchestra as well as some known Quartetts play bows made by Wolfgang Romberg.

Conservation Concerns

According to some estimates, the Mata Atlantica of the beginning of the 21st century covers no more than 5 to 10% of the area it covered in pre-Colombian times. In more recent times, this decline is essentially due to the progressive conversion of land for farming and for urban development.

In the absence of accurate surveys and despite recent discoveries of previously unknown populations of Pernambuco, it is generally accepted that the reduction in the natural habitat is leading to the decline of the species.

This raises the question of the conservation of Pau-Brazil.

Bowmakers and others involved in the music profession intend to do all they can to contribute to the conservation and regeneration of this species.

Alerted to the problem of sustainability of their supply of raw material by the Confederation of Craftsmen and Users of Natural Resources (Comurnat) and wishing to maintain the present quality of their output available for future generations, bowmakers decided to implement an action plan, the International Pernambuco Conservation Initiative (I.P.C.I. or Pernambuco Initiative). The objectives are:

To contribute to the preservation of Pau-Brazil through actions carried out in partnership with organizations involved in the conservation of this resource, notably by participating in programs aiming to conserve, rehabilitate or enrich areas which are suitable for the species;
To promote the sustainable use of Pernambouco;
To take action, where necessary, to attain the two main objectives indicated above.

As a result of discussions at the end of 1999 and beginning of 2000 between professional bowmakers and Comurnat, the I.P.C.I. is now represented in eighteen countries (Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, Switzerland, the United States) ; it is the first time that members of craft professions have mobilized at international level to resolve the problems of both the supply of raw material and the conservation of their particular resource.

Nature preserve bow

In spring 2014 USA started the consistent implementation of the "Washington Conservation Agreement". Since then crossing boarders with instruments and especially bows is now a worldwide risk, as many old bows contain parts which can not freely travel from country to country. This bow parts are ivory (bow tips and frogs) tortoiseshell, some kinds of ebony, pearl and leather. This situation forces us to reconsider the use of several materials in the art of bow making.
What is necessary? Where can we do without?
This new concept "Nature Preserve Bow" is designed without materials being already or soon banned from crossing boarders. The unique pernambuco wood which forms the individual character and sound of the bow is taken from certified old stock.
Its time for a change! Try out an alternative.
